Beautify your Lubuntu with this handy tool. Thanks to
Sergey Davidoff, who shared his
PPA. I've already recommended xcompmgr, but it's difficult to config because it's CLI (command line) only. This great app has a nice config gui among other things, like plugins, wide settings, and much more. Now it's available for Lubuntu 11.10 (or any other Ubuntu flavour). You can install this by typing this in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shnatsel/staging
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cairo-compmgr
And look for it at the system menu. Have fun!
Who's I? Either this is a personal blog or a distribution blog.
ReplyDeleteSorry? I don't really understand. This is a personal blog, but its topics are mainly Lubuntu.
ReplyDeleteFor the official news about Lubuntu you must go to lubuntu.net
Thanks for this - when I first installed, I couldn't work out where to get at the settings. Then I spotted the icon lurking in my system tray. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt also showed up in my "System Tools" menu area, rather than Accessories.
It might be a little over-demanding for my hardware, unless this eye-candy is affected by what seems to be a screen-refresh/video issue. But it's very nice to see my fairly spartan Lubuntu setup capable of a bit prettifying!
Yes, you've got to put it on startup. And you're right, it appears on system menu, not accessories. Entry now corrected. Thank you very much! :)
ReplyDeleteSo cool effects!! And for 40mb of ram on my old pentium 3 :)
ReplyDeleteTwo things:
- starting chromium maximized doesn't work correctly with cairo composite activated.
- the message we get when adding the ppa is scary :/ is beta or alpha?
Thanks for this option for Lubuntu!!
it should have a autostart.
ReplyDeleteYes, like Docky. It would be nice.
ReplyDeleteHi everybody ! :-)
ReplyDeleteI like Cairo Composite and I've succesfull installed it but there is an annoying problem with the righ-click of the mouse.
When I select a folder with the right click, the menù instantly it's open...I can't really choose a voice of the menù because is too fast opening and disappeare. Anyone have same problem ?
Sorry for my English
Thank you ! :-)
I Tried install but say impossible find cairo-compmgr
ReplyDeleteIf you have Lubuntu Precise (12.04) it will be impossible to find any package, because this PPA is for Oneiric (11.10) only. But the packages are still valid and installable on Precise. Try the Tools page and download from there.
ReplyDeleteTanks dude, i tried just download the deb packages and installed and working! but, how to add Cairo Composite to start automatic?
ReplyDeleteIt's not easy, because there's no GUI for easily editing startup, because we are developing our own tool. At the moment you can open a terminal and type:
ReplyDeletesudo leafpad /etc/xdg/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart
and add this line:
@cairo-compmgr
Remember to include the "@" symbol.
I wrote a script to setup autostart called "setup-autostart".
ReplyDeleteDownload and execute them.
Now if you want something to autostart, drop a desktop file in ~/Autostart.
How do you get a desktop file?
Click on menu, choose a category, hover over an item and right click "Add to desktop".
Now move that file from the desktop to the "Autostart" folder.
Done.
Nice trick. Noted! :D
